Get to Know : Robert Parra

January 26, 2016

Get to know Robert Parra - a student and supporter of Live Lotus, plus the man responsible for causing some laughter at the studio. We chatted with him and found out that he is passionate about the communities he surrounds himself in, has various talents and creative abilities, and even got some Lotus Crowns (beanies) in the hands of 35 VIP guests.

But first....

1. Why do you do yoga?

I would say why did I start yoga and then got back to wanting to do yoga...to live a healthy, positive & loving life, to reconnect and get back to really #DoingMe. The past 4 years I lost myself with not so healthy people who I thought and considered as friends. My body was here but my soul got lost, people started to suck the life/breath out of me in a negative way. I started classes at Live Lotus because it was local and in the neighborhood I grew up in and live in. It’s also not just a business ran by women, but by women who are living their motto. “Living your Journey, Living your Dream!”

2. How did you find Live Lotus?

One day I was working from my “satellite office” which I’m a fan and support local businesses, as I was at my usual seat in Roy’s Coffee Station in Japantown, I saw a Live Lotus business card and the rest is history.

3. What is your daytime job?

My daytime job is a part-time Sales associate soon to be a Network Associate Representative for Columbia Sportswear. As well as work for Paper Planes Collective based in Los Angeles as their Executive Assistant. My career, ventures and titles I hold, is an up and coming Comedian, a Social Entrepreneur, and CEO & Event Producer of Parra Productions.

4. Super awesome that you got some Lotus Crowns (beanies) over to a Paper Planes event! Tell me about the event and your connection to it?

I wanted to explore event planning and logistics on a larger scale. I got in contact with the Founder of Paper Planes Collective, Alma Tilghman and we started a conversation on how to get more Latino people within the entertainment industry.

She had asked me to work with her on a brunch hosting a group of industry people to have a conversation on creating more diversity within the industry. This brunch (hosted by Variety Latino an arm extension of UNIVISION) was scheduled during the Sundance 2016 Film Festival. I was in charge of putting together swags and goodies for 35 VIP guests, industry influences and makers.

I reached out to Live Lotus and ended up with 35 beanies. I really wanted to give back to Live Lotus and felt that I can help connect them to these 35 honorary guests. It was a way of paying it forward, to what is given to me through my journey with Live Lotus.

5. Sounds like supporting your community is important to you, why is that?

Someone gave me an opportunity growing up and I wanted to give back. From this radius, the Hensley Historic district and growing up in a very diverse environment, I know people didn't want to walk these streets because of gang members and the homeless walking through it. I feel the more that I can give to my own neighborhood and share my history, I can help it thrive.

6. Heard you've got a thing with comedy, tell me about that.

Yes, by nature I am funny but never knew how funny I was until I was given the opportunity to perform a 2-3 minute set at an open mic/comedy show at the Old Wagon Saloon here in San Jose in 2009, from their it has lead me to perform at such venues such as the San Jose Improv, Punchline in San Francisco, and John Lovitz comedy club in Los Angeles.

7. What is your all time vacation spot and why there?

If it is an extended week or weekend vacation I would say Los Angeles, because it is my 2nd home. I am able to enjoy my family & family friends who live there, as well as move & shake with Hollywood elites who I know personally in various roles they hold in the entertainment industry. By far Carmel, Ca. is my one day vacation. My Zen my “where I am disconnected” from the madness of the Bay Area especially in San Jose.

It’s where you can find this local A-list Silicon Valley Socialite enjoying a wine tasting at the local wineries of Carmel Valley, or relaxing on the beach getting a natural tan sipping on a glass of Tito's Vodka & Cranberry Juice.

8. If there was one world issue you could solve, what would it be?

So I want to make this funny…If I was Miss America, I would say "World Peace"…(laughs)

I want to be able to find a way how to share love, positivity and happiness - how can I channel that to other people in this world. I also think if everybody could smile once a day, that is something I would want to do that.

Yeah, that's it, making people smile.

9. Tell us something we should know about you...hidden talents, awesome hobbies? Anything?
By nature and profession I’m a dancer, which I went to college for. A floral designer and grow succulents in my garden and rolling out Succulents by Robert Parra this new year. Appeared & performed in the 2000 NFL - Pro-Bowl half-time show in Honolulu, Hawaii. And in 2014 was nominated for the LAM Community Award under the category of The Mover and Shaker. Currently, I am the Creator & Co-Collaborator of Equality Night with the San Jose Sharks, I sit on the Board of Directors for the Mexican Heritage Corporation, Silicon Valley Latino Democratic Forum, and a member of the Emerging Leaders Council of Outfest Film Festival of Los Angeles.
